Seinfeld had a rough start on NBC, with viewership ratings falling season after season. But the show’s fate changed after season four, when the story arc turned to the true account of how Seinfeld got produced by NBC. It then went on to receive numerous accolades. When the hour-long finale aired on May 14, 1988, 76.3 million viewers were left with mixed feelings – one critic even deeming it a big “So long, suckers!” farewell to an audience who had made the show about nothing such a big hit. The debate still rages today.
